#bOObs for Life with Sylvia Kouveli & Ted Meyer | Episode 054
Tuesday Nov 12, 2019
Tuesday Nov 12, 2019
Universe, what’s good?! Today's guests to round out #BreastCancerActionMonth are Sylvia Kouveli and Ted Meyer, who have come together in Los Angeles to create #bOObs for Life, a compilation of visually portrayed stories about physical trauma, personal struggle, survival, and the celebration of life. The exhibition is presented with support from the American Cancer Society.
Before the interview begins, Kelsey has an important announcement about her treatment status. She will be in treatment for another five years and encourages all who qualify to participate in the Breast Cancer Index test. Speaking of screening, Kelsey was on an episode of CureTalks with Priya Menon, Dr. Laura Esserman, and episode 014's very own, April Johnson Stearns to discuss screening.
In this interview, we discuss their individual backgrounds, their meeting, and what they hope to accomplish with this project. Sylvia Kouveli is a freelance photographer and digital marketer with a fascination for visual sociology. She aims to work on projects that build awareness and enhance inclusion in a social ambiance and through collaborative social action. Ted Meyer is a nationally recognized artist, curator and patient advocate who helps patients, students, and medical professionals see the positive in the worst life can offer. Ted’s 18-year project “Scarred for Life: Mono-prints of Human Scars” chronicles the trauma and courage of people who have lived through accidents and health crises.

Sunday Oct 20, 2019
Universe, what’s good?! Today’s episode features Ron Rapaport, a male breast cancer survivor. Yes, breast cancer impacts men! Accounting for one percent of total diagnoses, men are often diagnosed at later stages with poor prognoses. In addition, men often feel out of place in the sea of pink.
Ron is on a mission to change the way males are perceived and included in the breast cancer conversation. Here at TCSN, we are proponents of inclusivity and Ron does an excellent job of listing what needs to be changed in the community. Thanks, Ron for your tireless efforts! You can find him on Facebook.

For the Breast of Us | Episode 050
Friday Sep 20, 2019
Friday Sep 20, 2019
Universe, what’s good?! Today's episode features For the Breast of Us, an advocacy organization for women of color! Launched in March 2019 by Jasmine Souers and Marissa Thomas, FTBUS is on a mission to bridge a gap in representation. When Jasmine and Marissa were diagnosed with breast cancer, they hoped to find women who looked like them that were also experiencing may of the symptoms and feelings they were. After falling short, they decided to build their own table together, turning their pain into purpose.
If you have been longing for representation that is based in reality, this episode is for you! We discuss shortcomings in the community, as more African-American women are diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) than their white counterparts. Clinical studies are often disproportionally white, with only 6.2% of black women represented. This is leading towards more deaths within the black community. Something clearly needs to change!
If you would like to reach out to either Jasmine or Marissa, you can find them on their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Don't forget to sign up for updates! We will be releasing a newsletter soon. If you would like to donate to the cause, you can click here.
The Purpose from Pain collective is now available! If you have a business of your own and could use support, please consider joining. Check out our website and sign up for updates!
